Question 1: What was your most disappointing experience as a student?
The most disappointing experience I had as an architecture student was to develop a complete team studio project and I put so much work into it that everyone received the highest grade but me because the professor at that time thought I did little to deserve a high grade. When in fact the concept, the plan, the perspectives and construction sections were all done by me by hand. There were no computers at that time. So that was enough evidence that I made them all. Regardless of the clear evidence the professor almost failed me.
Question 2: As an academician, do you get the chance to sleep? (Does anything change?)
Let me speak for myself and some other very committed academic personnel. As a professor you suffer with your students and silently celebrate as well with their success. So striving for a better grade through hard work is something you never forget and, while one student is striving for excellence and some others not, an academic always strives for everybody’s excellence without distinctions. When one student has one project to hand over, the academic person has as many projects in his/her head as students are in the class. So nothing really changes.
Question 3: What does design mean to you and currently, how do you perceive the world of design?
Design is a professional experience where we, as designers, put our cultural baggage to work for a desired outcome. The design activity goes beyond lines and colors. It shows our world perception and the way we contribute for a better society in whatever that means. Designers are also victims of our contemporary world of thoughts. We celebrate life and communication constantly versus deception and total silence. We end up believing our future society will rise to be the best of the universe but not before de-designing our generational mistakes.
Question 4: If you had the chance, what would you change in your student life?
I would have put more effort to what my professors recommended. Now I understand what they meant when they said that such and such topics where very important for my future professional lıfe: To focus on subjects and topics I did not pay too much attention but I needed the most. it took me some more painful time and money to do it after my school ended. There was nobody out there to tell me anything like when I was in school. Out there is a jungle of professionals surviving and not sharing knowledge at all.
