Questions for Academics

| Mart 2018

Gökçe Kutsal is graduated from Bilkent University, Faculty of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. She is part-time instructor and architectural acoustics consultant. Her courses for 2017-2018 academic year are IAED 301-Interior Design Studio III (Class 3, Fall Semester), IAED 302-Interior Design Studio IV (Class 3, Spring Semester) and IAED 341- Architectural Acoustics and Fire Safety (Class 3, Fall Semester).

Interview:

Question 1: What was your most disappointing experience as a student?
Getting two vastly different critiques from both studio instructors in my very first year. I did not know what to do, or which path to take! I quickly learned that critiques are only recommendations and what you decide to do with your project should always be your own choice. After all, it is your design, not the instructor’s.

Question 2: As an academic, do you get the chance to sleep? (Does anything change?)
Sleep is a priority for me! My designs and thought processes suffer when I am low on sleep, so I do my best to manage my time and get enough. That way both my clients and my students get the optimum me.

Question 3: What does design mean to you and currently, how do you perceive the world of design?
Simply put, it is making people’s lives better. We may think we decide on the forms and functions of spaces, but it is up to users to make our design their own. Therefore, the user should always be at the core of “good” design. Unfortunately today, design is reduced to trends to be followed and leaves much to be desired in terms of functionality.

Question 4: If you had the chance, what would you change in your student life?
Socialisation. The “real” world is not about the grades you got as a student, it is about who you know. Being a design student is very time-consuming, and whatever time I had left was spent on being a radio host and a singer. If I had the chance, I would definitely make more effort to meet new people and network as a student.

I would like to thank you to Gökçe Kutsal for her kindness, help and understanding. It is my pleasure to make a interview with you and being your student.
