Gems within Our City, Ankara

Ankara is a home to important historical and cultural sites that shed light on Turkey’s rich past. This time I want to visit the spotlight on two historical places that I have visited and my thoughts and memory. Hamamonu and Ankara’s Castle ( Ankara Citadel ) each display classical Ottoman architecture that is a must to taste and experience before you step foot in Ankara. Hamamonu and the walk up to the Castle may appear similar at first sight, however, they offer different experiences for their visitors. Hamamonu is a place that is strongly concentrated on classical Ottoman architecture.

Hamamonu lies in the older and busier district of Ankara. It was renovated to revive the Ottoman Architecture and allow visitors to enjoy the city’s past. The hotel is located in the heart of the city. It is located in the heart of the city. It is located in the heart of the city. This way Hamamonu still retains its authenticity but offers usable and useful spaces for restaurant and shop owners. Hamamonu with its narrow alleys protrudes a homey atmosphere with its low rise buildings that are all white and brown. The ground floor of these buildings is now occupied with shops and restaurants. Ottoman architecture and being served is a traditional Turkish food, which is transformed into a city that is just like in Istiklal Caddesi in Istanbul. However, Hamamonu stands out from the famous Istiklal caddesi because it welcomes fewer visitors and projects in one type of architecture rather than different types of architecture and time periods. Ottoman architecture and the country’s past. Ottoman architecture and being served is a traditional Turkish food, which is transformed into a city that is just like in Istiklal Caddesi in Istanbul. Another star in Ankara is the “Ankara Kalesi” which was passed upon the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk, and finally the Ottomans which all add to this place unique features from different eras. Upon walking up the hill to reach the Castle, one is stopped by traces of Ottoman architecture that has been renovated and turned into souvenir shops which allow visitors to grab tangible items that shall remind them of this historical place long after they return to their routine life. The renovated buildings stand as a strong connection between Hamamonu and Ankara Castle since they both display classical Ottoman architecture. This made me wonder of the possible stories and feelings generated off these similar places to people living at the time. The castle of Ankara (Ankara Kalesi) stands so high and proud on a hill like a strong soldier protecting his territory. After reaching the top of the hill and after climbing steep stairs, one will stop to take a breath after the very steep walk up the hill but only to be surprised by the breathtaking panoramic view that the castle offers. However, it doesn’t stop there as every level of stairs unravels a different and a wider view of Ankara. Once you reach the top, you will be able to see the old and renovated buildings with red brick roofs and mosque minarets standing so tall as if pleased with their strategic location where they can be seen and admired by many. If you extend your eyesight, you will spot the more modern buildings and towers that Ankara is currently embracing. This is very much similar to Istanbul but in a much visible way where the old and classical Ottoman Architecture slowly fades into the modern Architecture.

After descending from the castle, you will treat yourself to two museums that speak the same language. Emirtan museum and Rahmi Koc museum has a traditional exterior and help keen visitors in better understanding the past. The Emritan Archeology and Arts museum tries to connect with the past and present a platform for cultural and artistic activities. Whereas, Rahmi Koc museum brings out the curious child inside all the due to its vast display of aviation related items as well as marine and many other sectors. The two museums exhibit traditional exteriors that are somewhat similar to hamamonu yet.

Each city in Turkey displays historical and cultural traces in a unique way that makes every city worth visiting and exploring. Each city has a different adventure and experience in store for its visitors. Ankara’s will be to Hamamonu and Ankara Castle and other equally rich places. Ankara Castle and Hamamonu are a short cut down to an hour or two in the majestic Ottoman era or Ottoman era. Today’s modern one.
